Process optimisation in logistics
"Optimising processes" and "creating added value" are not only decent-sounding and popular catchphrases at NOVOPLAST, they are also put into practice. In the plastics sector in particular, innovation can make all the difference. Often it is a good idea or a small detail that leads to faster production and delivery times or an even higher product quality. NOVOPLAST would like to continue to offer customers the best value for money in the future and is therefore investing heavily in optimising internal processes.
In the "Innovation and Technology" department, engineers deal with work processes of all kinds on a daily basis and develop solutions to make processes more efficient.
Elia Ryser recently developed a distance meter to optimise processes in the logistics department. The exact dimensions of the delivery must be specified on the delivery note. Until now, the logisticians had to measure this mass manually with a folding rule. In order optimise this process, Elia Ryser developed a distance meter.
He installed the device above the floor scales in the shipping company. This means that the weight and height of a parcel are determined in one step, without the logistician having to get off the forklift.
This device is a WiFi-enabled microcontroller that is connected to the display and sensor. The speed of sound is determined using two loudspeakers. The microcontroller processes the signal and converts it into distance. The logistician can easily read both the weight and the height of the relevant package on the display. This not only saves valuable time - thanks to the optimised measurement technology, correct data acquisition is increased and additional costs due to measurement errors are saved in the future.
In addition, the determined values are recorded in a database, which Elia Ryser and his colleagues can access at any time and from anywhere. The entire workflow is digitally documented and can be analysed in detail in the future.
